Artists!  Start Your Own Cut-Out Business and Sell to Private and Commercial Clients

Are you artistic with a flair for creating unusual designs from wood and on the look out for a way to make money from your talents?  If so you might consider creating cut-out decorations such as you’ll often see decorating roofs and gardens, and often in the shape of animals or letters forming names or messages, sometimes featuring products sold or made by the business for which the cut-outs are made.  If you like this idea you have the choice of making and selling your work or rent them to business and private clients.

Several reasons explain why people purchase or hire novel decorations like these and typically they are for decorative purposes or to announce a special event.  Whatever the reason, if your designs are novel and your handiwork is good, you’re going to get lots of repeat renters and buyers and plenty of word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied clients.

To achieve the highest profits you have to cover most or all of the usual reasons people celebrate in such high profile style, such as birthdays and new business openings, weddings and anniversaries, birth of a baby or coming of age.  The more novel and unique your designs the more popular your business will be and the less competition you’ll face from rival companies.

It pays to be different, very different if possible and you should create unique or very unusual designs to cater for customers preferring quirky over commonplace designs such as bundles of party balloons, stork carrying the new baby, wedding bride and groom.  They’re the sort of designs your rivals will also be producing, and that means you will be sharing your market with them.  Not so, however, where your designs feature uncommon animals such as elephants and giraffes, or the baby is shown arriving in a hot air balloon without help from the stork, or your lettering is colored bold and bright as compared to other people’s basic pastel designs.

Your typical customers will be the ones that want to make an announcement in their neighborhood about an important event that has happened in their family. These customers will just want to rent your decorations for a week or two. Charge them a reasonable fee per day and you will make a great profit. If they want your cutouts longer, charge a weekly fee that provides a bit of a discount from the daily rental fee.

When it comes to insuring that you will receive your decorations back, make sure that your customers understand that they will have to buy any decorations that are not returned or are ruined by vandals. This should cover you for any vandalism or theft that may occur occasionally.

You should be able to make anywhere from twenty to fifty dollars a day for your rental decorations. You will want to offer to deliver, install, and pick up the decorations for your customers. You can give your customers a discount per day if they keep the decorations for more than a day, the longer they use the decorations the better the discount per day.

You may not become incredibly rich with a business like this at first, but it could offer you a great extra income and the convenient option to be able to work from your home.

You will need to invest in boards that you can cut and paint on and seal. You want your cutouts to weather well since they will be outside. Therefore, you will need to invest in durable paints and sealers also. When your cutouts aren't being rented out, you will want to store them properly so that they will keep their shape and not get scratched in storage. If you have a large area around your home, you could even display them to those passing by with a sign explaining that they could be rented.

You will also need a vehicle to transport your decorations to your customers. If you make incredibly large decorations make sure that you have a way to transport them to your customers. You will probably need a few tools also to install your cutouts in people's yards.

You should advertise your business in your local newspapers and if you are able to, try to show your different cutouts from a website that your customers can look at and find information on how to contact you.

This could prove to be a very enjoyable business and profitable also.
