A good example is
topographical ephemera, such as prints, posters, maps and old guide
books. Offer an old postcard of some little known town or
village and you could have dozens of people bidding to own it.
That because 'Postcards' is a huge category on eBay which thousands
of people visit daily to key in place names to find new cards for
their collection. 'Postcards' even has a Topographical
sub-category which is further broken down by counties or states.
It's no big deal to find multiple bids on every single postcard
listed from within just a few miles of one another.
But what about prints?
They're very collectable and often fetch far higher prices than
their topographical postcard counterparts? But prints are not
categorised in quite so tight a fashion as postcards, nor are
topographical books, ephemera, posters and maps. That means
even the best topographical non-postcard items often go unsold.
OK, that’s not such a problem where potential bidders key their
collecting area into eBay's search engines. Yes, they'll find
anything remotely connected with their topographical needs, but that
could still run into many thousands of listings of related and
unrelated items and might deter most of us from looking further.
There is an answer,
and it works for many items people either can't find or don't want
to spend time looking for.
Let me explain with a
sneaky trick I use all the time:
* Postcards are
always best sellers, even really common types. So buy all the
10p common topographical postcards you can find at boot sales, flea
markets, collectors' fairs and yes, even on eBay. But the trick is
to list these WITH a related topographical print, under 'Postcards'.
That way, when people search Postcard topographical sub-categories
for their collecting area they'll also see the print. As these are
the very same people likely to want that print, with or without the
postcard, they’re more likely to buy.
I told you this was sneaky, but it really works! I've seen this work
well on countless occasions - I've done it myself many times.
I've also seen two items, listed together, start an almighty bidding
war between two or more people wanting one or other individual item,
many wanting both.
For my own business
I've added MASONIC CHARMS to boring old bracelets that I thought
would sell but didn't (more people want 'Masonic' memorabilia than
will sort through thousands of 'bracelet' listings);
BOXER DOG charms to a
necklace carrying a picture of a PORTUGUESE WATER DOG that few
people in the world even know to exist (Boxer dog is currently the
top breed searched on eBay); a few Lucy Dawson dog pictures to a
bundle of dog prints that just wouldn't sell. Lucy Dawson
collectors are really enthusiastic and because I added prints for
several different breeds I ended up with a fight for who won the
item and earned more than £50 on items that individually would total
a tenner, maybe less.
