Spy On Other People’s Driving Skills!

Here’s a variation on a concept you see on the nation’s highways every day, usually in the shape of a bumper sticker or sign in the back window of a lorry or truck saying something like:

‘How’s My Driving - Call 01234 567890!’

The typical business concept is where fellow drivers on the road let employing firms know how their own drivers are performing, before the company has an accident on its hands and a big compensation fee and legal bills to pay.

We all know pretty much how it works, but what you may not realise is the number you call to report good or bad driving isn’t always the employing firm itself.  More often it’s a middleman company that collects and collates calls which are assessed and patterns of poor driving reported back to employers.

Most of the time firms employing drivers pay a set fee per vehicle for the service.

This a business you could start right away, with just a computer and spreadsheet, a telephone line and a flair for organising phone calls and data into usable statistics.

But there’s another business opportunity here that few people seem to be operating, and it’s one of helping save heartache and worry for parents of teenage children who are new to the roads and may be driving dangerously.

The concept works exactly the same as for commercial drivers being assessed and reported back to employers, only in this case the vehicle carries the number of a central service working on behalf of parents and reporting back on matters concerning their children.

It’s fair to say that teenagers themselves will hate you for spying on them, but parents will love you for it and will be willing to pay a fixed fee every year you provide the service until their offspring can be trusted to drive unsupervised.  When you take on clients be sure parents actually do have ‘permission’ from their teenagers to display your advertising sign on vehicles.  You’ll find ‘permission’ is begrudged by children but parents can make permission a pre-requisite of providing a vehicle for young family members.  In time, with numerous cars on the roads bearing your telephone number, the concept will be commonplace and teenagers themselves will be less embarrassed and realise the service is highly beneficial to them.

You need to be subtle in how you convey problems to parents, as well as accepting that some calls will be hoaxes and pranks and not at all genuine.  So be sure to take all callers’ names and telephone numbers, and call back to confirm the details before assuming a complaint is genuine.

Get your first clients by advertising in local and regional newspapers or by submitting press releases to larger national publications.  When people sign up, have your telephone number printed on stickers for bumpers or back windows.  With a few clients to your name, word-of-mouth and people noticing your stickers will bring more clients than you might be able to handle yourself.  And that’s when you’ll need to employ other people to take calls for your business which can easily grow into a major national concern!
